Madras High Court told the CBSE that there were errors in translation in 49 questions of the examination paper, for which every answer should be given four marks. The bench ordered the allocation of 196 grace marks to all the 24,720 candidates who had written the paper in Tamil. Madurai bench's Justice CT Selvam and Justice AM Bashir Ahmed gave this order during hearing of a PIL filed by CPI (M) leader TK Rangarajan. The court asked the CBSE to revise the rankings of eligible candidates and publish them again.
Following the decision of the Madras High Court, there is stir in the CBSE and the Union Health Ministry. By giving 196 grace marks to each student, many of them are likely to make it to the merit list. At the same time, students who are already in the merit list will be out of it.
A senior health ministry official stating that the decision was unfair said that if such a verdict was to be given, it should have been given before the results were declared. Now that the admission procedure is in progress, thousands of students will be disturbed with this order.
