Whither pre-school education in India!
With an undue stress on window-dressing by schools, competition, talentism and marks economy right from kindergarten stage; the children are being made to read, write and do arithmetic right from the age of three through drills and parroting.

“Unfortunately, this has led to regression among children and the critical milestone of development of their physical, sensory and cognitive growth are being missed with negative consequences,” said a retired pre-school teacher, who had worked at a campus school of a local university in Jaipur.

If you go to pre-schools which have mushroomed in various localities of Jaipur, in most of them, barring a few, the classroom have become the places for pre-schoolers to sit still on desks to do imposed reading and writing tasks in their prescribed books and workbooks.

It has been seen that in the name of knowledge explosion and competitive world preparedness, most pre-schools in Jaipur have shifted the focus on academic achievements and what was earlier being taught at the primary school stage is now being taught at the pre-primary stage.

Instead of making the child to learn and develop, it has become the game of survival of the fittest in pre-schools. In such a situation, in every group 10 per cent children will do well, as ‘achievement by chance’, despite the institutional efforts. Most of children are being labelled as non-learners or low-achievers and being pushed out of pre-schools.

The special schools in the city are now getting queries for admission in schools and requests to start units for ‘children with learning disabilities’ who are finding it difficult to find teachers professionally trained sensitive teachers who can prepare and transact individualised interventions to help such children.

“I am getting a lot of children brought by parents to know why their children were not learning and if they could get help. I test children to find the missed out critical developmental milestones in their pre-school life and get a few activities done by a specialist school-life occupational therapist who works with me. Then, parents are asked to get those activities done at home and report back. But only 20 percent parents come for follow up sessions,” said a child psychiatrist in the city.

Are schools producing little adults in their premises and that too through the system being run on the factory model of schooling! One wonders!!
